The deeply agonizing news this morning is the roof collapse of the present geology dept of the university college, trivandrum. It pained me because I am a 1963 graduate of the dept of geology univ college. When I was a student the home of geol dept was in the senate house campus and on the first floor of stat dept. by 1963 June the dept was shifted to the building that collapsed. It is nearly century old structure of wooden roof frame and red tiles. The only upkeep was the payout by govt of salaries and nothing else. Now there will be cries to preserve the building instead of building modern space. Bottom line is that geol building is first in the que to collapse. This will be followed by others. And the cultural elite of town will do evening dharna or what ever in the format.
