16 Dec Kerala cv prof Radhakrishnan reportedly announced initiating new courses of study that are at par with universities internationally.. Having been with univ edu for the last four plus decades I do not accept or rather reject this initiative. It is a mistaken notion that the top ten univ in the world offer new cutting edge degrees. Instead what they practices is cutting edge research topics for their ph d s to follow. Look at the fate of hundreds of msc environmental science degree holders in the country. But for a top one or two percent rest are languishing in unrelated jobs ..or environmental engineering for that matter. Or environmental technology. Or take for example biotechnology, bioinformatics or photonics. If one took a m sc degree in any of these one had it. Would not even qualify for a higher sec teachers job. So what is needed is getting a msc in core science subjects and then go in for a specialization at research level. Geology and applied geophysics are exceptionally good areas of study as these fetch descent placements globally and so a good life and career. For any thing inthe new gen courses in science or engage future is in a bank desk job if lucky..or else as a marketing executive in pharma or mobile.. So vc Radhakrishnan keep this in mind. Your very job itself is by being a chemistry man and not anything else. So do not preach about new gen courses and more of them….
