I went back to the hill and valley dist of idukki for a day of work and that too to be with the dist guide teachers who supervise the work of child scientists in the area. Roughly eighty teachers attended. Men slightly less than women. The sessions was held in one of the halls in the painav secretariat. The complex is perched in the slope of a ridge. This gadgil and kasturirangan controversy is needed. All the valley floors in range are towns. Slopes are carved into road right of ways. The slopes nearly 25-30 deg are plantations. Mostly rubber. Elongate homes with sat dish and electricity and of course Suzuki cars decorate the slope. But in the upslope from road bed may be one homestead along the road. I and infant any one would for that matter would love the early settlers, say two gens ago for their pioneering and historic efforts when the only slogan was make money to buy food medicine and educate children. No one worries about the environs. Even today beyond the monoculture the environs are not harmed. But for an orthodox like gadgil, or kasturirangan who never went through the hardship of the settlers, and who came into this world with silver spoon or at least a spoon, there is no wonder that they took the stand based in science in filing the report. Truly the sensible aim of gov shall be not to up root any settler, but to prevent more settlers going in. The dipping birth rate and opportunities out side of the valley and slope district will harbinger the mood to get away to other states and nations in the world. We had set a precedence right from the days of silent valley in the late sixties or early seventies about the hills and valleys in the western ghats and how to keep them for their sake or for the sake of all the slice Humanity called keralite. I am darn sure that the g and k report implementation will be like the india pak dispute resolution .. A never resolved issue.. Or an issue like mullaperiyar… But then take super fast bus ride to this are for quick feast to the eye and to have a glimpse of the efforts of our determined brothers and sisters who chose to make good life over there….they are the Dutch and Portuguese who came to india…
