There is an impressive picture of a cutaway ridge (an operating rock quarry) somewhere in Kanyakumari dist captured by the award winning camera artist, Mr. rajan poduval, appearing in the front page of tvm edition of mathrubhoomi daily. It gave a mixed feeling to me and it must have been so in the minds of thousands; yet the scene would have lingered differently in the memory. For me it is a message that a horizontal picture can provide impressively. It would tend to melt the minds of lovers of nature, especially those who live in mansions or mansion like homes comfortably and oblivious of the hot summer heat of nights and days. But a vertical view of the same scene, available to view for a restricted number, perhaps is a reality of the rest of india and rest of the world. What the rock quarry depicted in the print page is only a minuscule patch compared to the very large mines and quarries in the rest of the country. the mining-quarrying is a step in the pursuit to provide human comfort and better infrastructure. So I welcome such mining and quarrying as long as such sites are carefully and technologically selected before launch of excavations for the daily needs of the nation and he society. Yet such picture do a job of selfie.
